Snow is forecast for the week ahead. Brrrr...Lovely....
I have been buying eggs for two years now! Two years!! Can't believe it!!!

Last week on my weekly shopping trip to town I had this sudden urge to call into the Produce shop and buy some chickens, SO I DID!
Someone called me a mother hen once, I know now what they mean...
This is home for them at the moment, snuggy in front of the fire.
They'll need a little nurturing for a while.

Chirpy little things they are...
oh..those dear little chicks..how wonderful that you're on the road back to egg production..
ReplyDeleteHopefully they are not all Roosters!!
DeleteWe had had chickens for 4 years but both of them died in the heat in January so I've been buying eggs for 6 months and it's not the same as shopping in our own back yard. Need to fix the coup over the holidays and get new chickens too. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane
ReplyDeleteAwww they are so sweet! The first thing I would have done is a chicken coop :) I fondly recall your "chicken of the week" posts.
ReplyDeleteI know, I can't believe I have waited so long... Hubby has had other priorities! :)
DeleteThey are so cute, if you would like to make them a "mother" you just tear or cut an old flanny sheet into strips about 1 or 2 cms wide and long enough to just touch the floor of their box, doubled so it hangs from the wire you have over the top, it creates a forest of close hanging strips, up one end, which they will then snuggle into, it keeps them warm
ReplyDelete. If they get quite cold at night you can hang a small light globe at one end not touching the strips, the heat will be enough to warm the whole box if you cover the end where the strips are to keep the heat in. Don't cover the whole box as it can overheat.
Thank you Margaret, this sounds like a great idea, it is soooo cold here at the moment, not a good time to have bought these chicks. I'll try the hanging sheets strips, it will make them so much more cosy. :)
DeleteHey there Karen - I just love toasted chicks ..lol. They certainly do look snug and happy there.
ReplyDeleteI too thought that you'd have lots of happy hens already running around your new place. Won't be long till they are I guess. Ours are off the lay (again). The ultimate insult seems to be buying laying mash AND eggs!
Good luck in the new venture. cheers Wendy
Thanks Wendy, I thought I would have heaps of Hens running around by this too but can you believe this place did not come with a chook coop! Now who would live on 100 acres with no chook coop!!!??
DeleteWhat a good spot for the little ones...snuggly and warm.
ReplyDeleteWhat breeds are they?
x
Hi Zara, they are suppose to be Astralorps and Sussex, but I am a bit skeptical! Always interesting to see what a chick turns out like. x
