I'm very proud of my little Cabbage Patch but I'm not a real lover of Cabbage, I don't mind it boiled up occasionally with a little dob of butter and sprinkle of salt & pepper especially with a Corned Beef dinner.
I also do the 'Chinese Mince' dish, with heaps of cabbage and rice and I can think of a great use for the leaves in about 4 months time...
but other than that...
What do you do with Cabbage?
I grew about 14 cabbages this winter. (Only one more to go!!)
ReplyDeleteI tend to cut it up finely and put it in bolognaises and casseroles to extend them. I found with my family (1A 4 teenage boys taller than me) a normal sized cabbage could last for 2 meals.. sometimes 3.
Hi Karen
ReplyDeleteThis week I made Stuffed Cabbage Rolls and they were delicious! The idea can from: Rhonda at Dow to Earth - http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com/2011/10/stuffed-cabbage-rolls.html

Yum, the stuff cabbage rolls sound good.
ReplyDeleteMake sauerkraut. You can give it to me if you don't like it. It's preserving, you'll love it! I've always dreamed of too many cabbages so I could make sauerkraut, I almost bought a large old pottery crock once:)
Also I slice it through my salads almost every night. My kids even love to eat it raw this way.

I've been thinking the exact same thing and thinking about trying to freeze it! i made the cabbage rolls and they were nice...I seem to always fall back on the chinese mince dish too!
ReplyDeleteAt least your's look nice and healthy...mine have been overtaken by caterpillars.

there are a few recipes I use on the site but we love colelaw chinese salad with sesame seeds and always vegtable bake where I use up all the veg in the fridge. But my favorite is the simple bangers, cabbage and mash with onion gravy.

Make coleslaw! I like to use both red & white cabbage for eye appeal, but just plain white is okay too. And homemade is so much better than the muck they sell at the supermarket!
ReplyDeleteI also slice it very finely & mix with finely shredded silverbeet & steam them together. Fantastic iron content! You can add butter & an Oxo cube before serving to make it extra special.
ReplyDeleteSpring Rolls! Hmmm, yummy. or crunchy asian salad.
ReplyDeleteMake spring rolls, mix shredded cabbage with chicken mince, onion, garlic and ginger and a thickened soy sauce. Cook together and when cool put into spring roll wrappers, fry or bake in the oven. YUM!
ReplyDeleteVietnamese coleslaw - shredded cabbage, carrot, mint leaves, spring onion & peanuts with a sweet chilli dressing. Dressing is made with lime juice, fish sauce, chillies, sugar and a bit of water. Really nice!
ReplyDeleteI melt a little butter in a pan add a dash of curry powder and throw in the finely sliced cabbage just for a couple of minutes to wilt. Yum!!
ReplyDeleteAll these ideas are great but the sauerkraut really appeals. I think I may have used all three versions you suggest in your post!
ReplyDeletePanfried in a little butter with a generous dash of dried dill and pepper then add a little water and simmer until soft. Delish. melx
ReplyDeleteOh Gosh, your all making my mouth water for Cabbage and it's only 8 am ... These ideas are great!! I am copying them down now and will mix up my cabbage dishes over the next few weeks, I'm very excited! Can't believe I didn't think about the Coleslaw!! ;)
ReplyDeletecongratulations on your fabulous cabbage harvest..cabbage is so versatile and i use it in numerous ways but one thing i love to do is cook finely diced onion and bacon and then add lots of medium shredded cabbage and cook it until the cabbage is soft..add the usual seasonings and serve with sausages and mash or whatever takes your fancy..good luck with all the great ideas provided in the comments..
ReplyDeleteI make sauerkraut, or just can or freeze the cabbage, you can also make and can chow chow which is very good but corned beef and cabbage would be my favorite.
ReplyDeleteOh yum! Coleslaw, boiled cabbage with a handful of bacon pieces thrown in, cabbage rolls.
ReplyDeleteI love cabbage,,,,my kids don't lol but I love it!
I smiled when I read about your cabbage intentions in 4 months time! I tried this but it didn't really work for me...just limp, warm cabbage in the bra..that kept sliding out of place!
ReplyDeleteLove fresh cabbage, as is or in coleslaw. Also steamed with fried onions and bacon alongside roast pork. Also a fan of chow mein, too! It's such a great kid pleaser. Happy munching :)
Sauerkraut..although have never made it from scratch.
Sue Kreitzman does a gorgeous curried cabbage (I could just eat some now). If it doesn't come up in a google search let me know and I'll give you the recipe.
