Chicken of the Week Part VI

SIZZLES, A Sizzle is a cross breed between a Silkie and a Frizzle...

I purchased these two as chicks in a pot luck pen.  I was told that some of the chicks were born with the characteristics of a Silkie and had 5 toes on each foot, other were born with normal chicken feet!!

 I decided on one with 5 toes and one with 4 toes.

It's really been amazing watching these two grow up and change along the way at first I though I had myself a Rooster but then realised she was just the four toed cross, so she would be mostly Frizzle... 

 

It is really hard to get a clear photo of these girls as their feathers keep flapping around in the wind . . .

This one is obviously carrying more Silkie, She's a beautiful thing, so pretty to look at.  Very quiet girls they are too, they keep very much to themselves, even perching on an outside limb of an evening....

Real 17th Century Madame's aren't they, with their fashionable high collars and ruffles.  

Looking for two Grand names . . .What do you think?

And as for Last weeks chooks....

Well once again so many names to choose from, it's taken me a little while to submit this post as It has been just too hard to choose a name from everyone's wonderful suggestions. But Finally . . .
For Miss Cranky Pants I just couldn't go past Mrs Tipple,
 Suzanne wrote "my grade one teacher, who was nasty as I remember, her name was Mrs Tipple.....heaven forbid if you called her Mrs Tickle by mistake, as we often did". You do come up with some fabulous names Suzanne, thank you.

And after much deliberation I decided on Hilda for the Old boiler..., thanks Christine.

Thanks to all of you who played last week, there were some really strong and interesting names amongst them, I could have chosen any of them. Next week, for the Sizzles, I'll be making it easier on myself and the names will be picked from a HAT!!

I have just realised that I have never announced the new identities of my Tin Chooks, keepers of my garden.

Chicken of the Week Part V

It's been a while since I've taken you down the coop,  I think a few of the girls are upset they don't have names yet! 

So lets get back to the game!  

A brief update for those of you that are new to the chicken game.

 This is not a giveaway, there is no prize money,  I just need help naming my chooks, if you have nothing better to do and want to play, it could be loads of fun!  All you have to do is 

"Name that Chook"

 You might recognise this old lady from a recent post, she's a tad worried she might be headed to the boiling pot!  She was one of my first ever layers, she's seen a few girls come and go over the years, survived a couple of fox intrusions and has welcomed many a new bird into her coop, she's smart and she still holds a good spot on the roost. I don't know how productive she is in the egg department these days but she's certainly makes me laugh when she puts on her angry face!!

Then there is Cranky pants here who is just nasty! but she does make a really great mum. There is no chance of checking how many eggs she's sitting on when she goes broody, she's got a peck that would take off half your arm!! 

Last time round it turned out to be just one, My guess is she wouldn't let any of the others lay with her!

 Look at that face! What do you think she is thinking? Maybe you had an old School Mistress that stared down at you like this?

Chicken of the Week Part IV

It certainly was a Toss Up this week! 

but thanks to The Duck Herder I not only have two new beautiful names, but I also now know what breed they possibly derived from!  Hamburgs hey!

One popped out to say hello this morning and there are a couple more that weren't quite ready to come out for the photo!  I have already named them with some beautiful names suggested from Suzanne in the very first 'Chicken of the Week' Post.

Meet Maude, and hiding in the back wings are Mavis & Ethel. (you will meet these soon).  

Now, who is next in 'THE GAME'

Only because I want to show off this magnificent blue sky here on this chilly but sunny Winters day, 

Lets name these two as well!

Meet the Peeps

 Rita, Ava, Anias, and the two newest hatched: 

Sophie and Samantha, little did you know you would be naming two little yellow chicks Cathy.  

Hopefully they stay two pretty little ladies.

I don't think Gladdys or Gwendolyn biologically mothered any of these chicks, but Rita does have a few fluffy feathers on her feet....so we will see.  

I wonder who belongs to who? 

 I do have quite a mixed coop and they all have their own unique identities.

 Chooks don't appear to be discriminative, once they have established their pecking order all my chooks run together, and very harmoniously. They all sleep, eat and lay together. They sometimes even share the job of sitting on the eggs...

I sometimes get three or four hens go broody at once and they just about sit on top of each other, I have witnessed them pushing each other out of the way and even sneaking eggs from under the other...When one needs a feed, the other just takes over, however I think it is quite a fight to get back on top again once the nest is left.

I think Gwendolyn is due in about 7 - 10 days, 

so we''ll be keeping a close eye on her.

 Makes me VERY Clucky!!!

NAME THAT CHOOK

All feathers and frills for the show....They certainly look the part don't they! Just between you and me though, they much prefer a good old Barn Dance.   

I busted them on the deck yesterday....

LAST WEEKS WINNERS

Gladys (Gladdy)

I had an elderly lady that lived next door to me when I was growing up, her name was Gladdy. I very clearly remember the day I lost control of the Ride on Mower, I jumped off and watched it plough straight into her fence, I'll never forget the look on her face as she peered at me through her kitchen window. . .Yeh, and then she told my DAD!

I have some very fond and funny memories of  her,  This little chooky will keep those memories around for a while longer now.

Miss Gladdy has some very exciting news to share with you....

 First borns....just hatched this morning, So as not to waste any of these beautiful names that you have come up with, I will name these little peeps in order from last weeks comments.

The cute little Yellow one will be Rita.  Thanks Smiley Mum

The little Black one will be Ava and the Red Stripy at the back will be Anias, thanks  Suzanne

You would have noticed there are still about four eggs under her ready to pop open anytime now, they will be introduced to you real soon.  I also managed to sneak four eggs under Gwendolyn last week, so Yes she will become a Mum, and all that sitting will be worth it.
